CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

AURORA / SPIDER WOMAN
Cast

VALENTIN
Latino, mid-20's to early-30's, young revolutionary thrown into prison and tortured for information about his contacts on the outside. Fantasizes about a life outside of the prison walls and eventually warms to a frienship (possibly more) with Molina. Role requires excellent actor/singer (to a solid high A) who can be at times intense and dangerous, then soft and vulnerable. Brief/partial non-sexual nudity may be required (script calls for his underpants to be changed onstage which may result in brief but discreet rear nudity).

MOLINA
Gay window dresser, mid- to late-30's, effeminate, story-teller (relates the tale of the Spider Woman), imprisoned for soliciting an underage male, now being manipulated by the warden to get information from Molina about his outside connections. Roles requires excellent actor/singer (to F).

WARDEN
Mid-40's to mid-60's, run the Latin American prison where Valentin is being tortured; will do anything required to get the information he needs; intelligent and refined, yet capable of inspiring fear in all prisoners and guards.

ESTEBAN and MARCOS
Mid-20's to mid-50's, rough and extremely intimidating guards who taunt and torture the prisoners. Primarily acting roles, but some singing required in full company numbers.

MOLINA'S MOTHER
Mid-50's, warm, caring, represents the ideal mother, mezzo soprano (to E-flat).

MARTA
Mid-20's, upper-class girl about whom Valentin dreams, mezzo or soprano (to G).

AURORA'S MEN/PRISONERS
6 to 8 male singers/dancers (not all must dance) to play featured roles (Gabriel, Aurelio, etc.) throughout the show, many with solo vocal lines and dialogue.

FOR CALLBACKS: please come prepared to dance/sing/read from the score/script, as requested.

Please be advised that the theater is not air conditioned and dress appropriately.
